In Yucatán, there are approximately 442,000 people with disabilities, which means that 17 percent of the total population has sensory, intellectual, physical, or psychological impairments. However, the majority of people with disabilities work in the informal sector, while only a few have positions in the state government or private companies, according to María Teresa Vázquez Baqueiro, director of the Institute for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities of the State of Yucatán (Iidepey).

Currently, programs are being implemented to promote employment inclusion, such as the Empleatón, which took place on June 13th and resulted in the creation of 60 new jobs in various sectors. Claudia Ponce Miranda, director of CRIT Yucatán, mentioned that one in every seven people has some form of disability. Unfortunately, there is still not complete openness on this issue, so very few companies are committed to inclusion.

Experts have also pointed out that inclusion should occur in all areas, including employment, education, and society.

“Talking about employment inclusion means addressing the areas of education and social awareness, where the right of individuals to create a life plan that allows for independence and, above all, well-being is visible,” emphasized Vázquez Baqueiro.

The Secretariat of Education of the State Government (Segey), through the Directorate of Special Education, has been promoting educational, employment, and social inclusion through activities that contribute to the holistic development of students.
