Peso Pluma has become the new standard-bearer for Mexican regional music. Amidst the presence and Latin influence in current music, such as reggaeton and trap, with artists like Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Arcángel, or Becky G, whom Latin America has exported to the international stage, “corridos tumbados” have gone from being popular in northern Mexico to leading the charts of the most listened-to songs in the world. This phenomenon would not be complete without the presence of the Mexican singer.

The symbol of “La Doble P” is now globally celebrated. “Corridos,” which have long served in Mexico to showcase the culture of drug trafficking, money, and drugs, as an artistic expression depicting reality, have found a global exponent in this new subgenre created by Natanael Cano. By reviving the symbolism and melodies of corridos and combining them with trap, a new global phenomenon has emerged. Artists like Peso Pluma have transported the entire Mexican regional culture and urbanized it, continuing to portray the reality of the country through music. Now, in a global landscape with a recent subgenre of Gen Z artists who have found multiculturalism as the reason for their success.

Peso Pluma is not just a singer; it is the artistic name of a young man from Zapopan, Jalisco, who, alongside other great exponents like Natanael Cano or Junior H, has propelled the importance of Mexican regional music. Peso Pluma’s career began in 2020 when he released his first live album in February of that year, followed by his first studio album titled “Ah y qué?”. Later, in 2021, Peso Pluma released his second album titled “Efectos secundarios,” which entered the Billboard Hot 100 with the single “Por las noches.”

Undoubtedly, his meteoric rise to international fame came in 2023 with collaborations with Natanael Cano, Junior H, and Nicki Nicole. Songs like “AMG,” “PRC,” and “El Azul” positioned Peso Pluma as one of the main exponents of Mexican regional music with corridos tumbados. With songs like “Ella baila sola” with Eslabón Armado, “Chanel” with Becky G, and “La bebé (Remix)” with Yng Lvcas, the artist demonstrated his versatility within the new subgenre and showcased the power of his art, making him the first Mexican singer to surpass 40 million listeners on Spotify and the Mexican artist with the most entries on the Billboard Hot 100.

The global phenomenon of the Mexican singer is undeniable, as Peso Pluma has 52,582,121 monthly listeners on Spotify.

After two studio albums, Peso Pluma continues with the rhythm of successful and diverse collaborations that have allowed him to reach international fame and position himself as one of the most listened-to artists globally. His third release, “Génesis,” stands out for collaborations with Natanael Cano on “Carnal” and with Junior H on “Luna y Lady Gaga,” as well as featuring singles like “77 ft.,” “Bye,” and “Nueva vida.” The album consists of 14 songs and will be released on June 22, 2023.
