“Preemptive Political Propaganda” Shut Down in Mérida

Like other cities in the country, Mérida and its surroundings have started to fill up with signs on walls and billboards promoting the image of various politicians aspiring to elected positions in the 2024 elections.

Regardless of the fact that the electoral calendar for the upcoming process has not begun, the names and photographs of candidates from different political parties – blue, tricolor, yellow, green, and maroon – have flooded the landscape in the face of a passive National Electoral Institute (INE) that has not yet issued any official statement or recourse regarding the matter.

Given this lack of action and the permissiveness that the Institute has shown on the issue, residents of the Yucatecan capital have decided to take action themselves by placing “citizen closure” seals on the walls, posters, and labeled signs.

A group of individuals affiliated with the organization Misión Rescate México started their work in the northern part of the city on Sunday afternoon in the streets of the Montebello neighborhood, where they found different advertisements promoting candidates for mayoralties, governorships, and the presidency of the republic.

“This is an early electoral campaign; it is not yet time to inundate ourselves with political advertising. That’s why the INE provides them with a calendar that they must respect. But using the excuse of internal processes, everyone is promoting their image for the upcoming elections,” said Reyes Augusto Escalante Escalante, coordinator of the movement in Yucatán.

Using brushes, rollers, and glue, citizens placed seals on the political propaganda, bearing the legend “Citizen Closure.”

Furthermore, it states that the reason for placing the seals is because the citizens are tired “of illegal campaigns, harassment by political parties and candidates during the electoral campaign, the use of improper and unknown origin resources, visual pollution, permanent promotion campaigns, and disparity in the electoral contest” outside the established timeframes for these activities.

Around 70 public spaces occupied by propaganda from different political parties were sealed as a first measure.

Similarly, Escalante Escalante mentioned that they are doing this as a citizen’s call to the INE to take action, enforce the law, and sanction individuals and parties that violate the rules of the 2024 electoral process.
