According to the report from the Federal Health Secretariat, cases of conjunctivitis in the state of Yucatán have experienced a concerning increase in recent weeks, surpassing 10 thousand cases as of the latest report from the federal institution.
It is important to remember that the occurrence of conjunctivitis tends to significantly increase during the hot season, and this year has been no exception, as during the hottest week, 858 cases were reported. To date, the total number of reported cases in the state has reached 10,540.
Of the cases recorded in the region, four thousand nine hundred seventy-nine have been in men, and five thousand five hundred sixty-one in women, meaning that women have been more affected by the conjunctivitis virus.
The General Directorate of Epidemiology of the federal agency has highlighted that in just two weeks, 765 new cases of conjunctivitis have been registered, up to week 28.
This figure reflects an increase of five thousand eight hundred thirty-six cases compared to the same period in 2022, which was four thousand seven hundred four, less than half of what has been reported in the current health authorities’ report.
For this reason, the Yucatán Health Secretariat (SSY) has urged the population to reinforce their hygiene habits, especially handwashing, as conjunctivitis is transmitted through direct contact with the virus.
