Renán Barrera promotes the educational development of the municipality’s population

Through the Municipal English Academy, the City Council works towards the academic and professional development of everyone.

To contribute to the educational and professional skills development of all, allowing them to broaden their job opportunities, Mayor Renán Barrera Concha promotes programs and actions dedicated to strengthening the English language in the municipality.

The Mayor informed that through the Municipal English Academy, they work with children, youth, and adults to train them in mastering the language, which is an essential tool for accessing postgraduate programs and job offers both within and outside the country.

He emphasized that Mérida, in particular, is attractive for foreign investment and the establishment of companies that offer vacancies requiring English proficiency. Therefore, it is important to have these programs that will improve their quality of life.

He highlighted that graduates of the Municipal English Academy receive an official recognition from the Ministry of Education of the State of Yucatán (Segey), which adds a certified document to their training, validating them as interpreters of the English language.

Barrera Concha congratulated the 23 graduates for completing the eight semesters that made up the 2022-2023 school year. They received diplomas and certificates issued by the Mérida City Council and Segey.

During the ceremony held at the “Silvio Zavala Vallado” auditorium of the “Olimpo” Cultural Center, the students of the Academy acknowledged the interest and efforts of the City Council in expanding educational opportunities for all.

“It is a great opportunity for those of us who want to study this language, which is very important nowadays as it can open many doors not only in our city but worldwide,” said Aranza Álvarez Vázquez.

María José Cáceres Delgado, Director of Social Development, stated that the Municipal English Academy not only provides students with a space for their education but also takes care of family finances by offering an alternative option to private institutions.

She mentioned that, in addition to the Municipal English Academy, the municipality has additional programs to strengthen education, such as “Computadora en Casa” (Computers at Home), benefiting 138 individuals directly and 414 indirectly; “Becas Económicas” (Economic Scholarships) for elementary and middle school students, directly supporting 4,146 students and indirectly benefiting 12,438 students; the Fair for Discounts on Higher and Upper Secondary Education Scholarships, benefiting 500 individuals directly and 1,500 indirectly.

Finally, she mentioned the Propaedeutic Courses ISAIS, EXANI I, and EXANI II program, which awarded 2,652 scholarships and indirectly benefited 7,956 students.
