The National Water Commission (Conagua) has reported that Saharan dust is expected to arrive in the Yucatan Peninsula this weekend and will persist throughout the month of July.

As is customary during the months of June and July, Saharan dust reaches Mexican territory, and according to the main forecasts, dry air from the Sahara Desert is expected to begin reaching Yucatan starting this weekend.

According to the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), the African dust has positive effects as it reduces the likelihood and intensity of tropical cyclones by inhibiting the formation of storm clouds.

While it is believed that it could affect air quality, it has been ruled out as a risk to the population, as its effects are primarily at higher levels, influencing cloud formation and rainfall.

According to the main forecasts, Saharan dust will begin arriving in the Yucatan Peninsula over the weekend; however, it is expected to be in low concentrations, so no significant impact on the population is anticipated.

It has also been announced that a new concentration of dust is expected to reach the Yucatan Peninsula during the following week, but in lower concentrations.

As previously mentioned, it does not pose a risk to the population; however, since Saharan dust is a mass of hot and dry air that contains biological and chemical materials, including spores and mites that can be harmful to the nasal and throat mucosa, it is recommended that people avoid prolonged exposure to outdoor air.
