Sea Turtles at Risk Due to Vehicle Invasion in Chuburná Dunes

With the arrival of summer vacations, there has been an increase in visitors to the port of Chuburná, raising concerns about the presence of motorized vehicles in the dunes of this port, which is known as a nesting area for turtles.

It is currently the nesting season for turtles, and authorities have requested not to interfere with the natural process and to avoid disturbing the turtles that come to lay their eggs. However, not everyone seems to heed these warnings, as there has been an increase in vehicles in the nesting area of sea turtles.

It should be noted that there are established limits for vehicle circulation in the area, but these limits are not being respected. Additionally, signs have been ignored and are in deplorable conditions.

Volunteers who are involved in the protection and conservation of sea turtles are on alert to safeguard marine life in case of any sightings of turtles.

One concerning incident reported by the Nautical Committee of Chuburná was on June 26th when trucks invaded Chuburná beach, attempting to take away tons of sand.

Regarding the vehicles that do not respect the designated area, a report was sent to the Ecological Police at the beginning of the nesting season. They have the authority to forward the license plate information of violators to federal authorities.

It’s important to highlight that such violations can lead to fines since there is the Official Mexican Standard NOM-162 SEMARNAT 2012, which establishes specifications for the protection, recovery, and management of turtle populations.
