The influx of visitors to the port of Progreso and other beach destinations in the Yucatan is just beginning to pick up so far this summer vacation season.
In this regard, Manuel Contreras Alcalá, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) of the port, indicated that this absence of tourists is normal, at the start of the holidays, especially since people spent resources at the end of classes, so a rebound is expected in the coming weeks.
“We come from a matter of economic wear and tear for many families throughout the Yucatan, due to the end of the course, school outings, you have to buy costumes, festivals. In two or three weekends before the end of the vacation period, the beaches are going to get crowded, ”he explained.
He informed that the arrival of up to 2 million tourists is expected during the summer vacation period on the Yucatan coast, for which the merchants prepared a month in advance, in terms of infrastructure adaptation and hiring additional personnel to face the customer demand.
He said that the main rebound in terms of tourist arrivals would be generated, mainly, in Progreso, Uaymitún, and Telchac Puerto, although, in general, in the entire Yucatecan coastal strip it is expected that the summer will generate a million-dollar economic spill.
“We are calculating more or less a 600, 700 million pesos that there should be spills on the entire Yucatecan coast. Let’s remember that it is not only the issue of those who arrive in Progreso, but of those of us who are already in Progreso and all the inhabitants of the coast, since there is additional consumption,” Contreras Alcalá concluded.
