The economic recovery of the hotel sector in Yucatán is progressing slowly, as by the end of May, the lodging establishments in the region were only able to fill 50 percent of their rooms, according to reports from the Mexican Association of Hotels in Yucatán (AMHY).

The figure achieved by the hotels in May represents an increase of only two percentage points compared to the previous year.

Specifically, Mérida had the highest occupancy rates and a three-percentage-point growth compared to 2022, but its current 52 percent was not significantly higher than the state average.

Juan José Martín Pacheco, the president of AMHY, pointed out that overall, the average occupancy rate for the state was 37 percent. In this group, occupancy decreased by 2.66 percentage points compared to the same month last year.

The hotel leader stated that after Mérida, the destinations with the highest occupancy rates were: Izamal with 39.38 percent, coastal hotels with 38.78 percent, Valladolid with 36.08 percent, and Chichén Itzá with 34.43 percent.

The statistics from AMHY are based on a sampling of 89 hotels in the state, with a total of 5,472 rooms. Out of this total figure, 63 were in Mérida, with 4,743 rooms, and 26 were in the rest of the state, with 729 rooms.

Martín Pacheco noted that May is not typically characterized by high tourist activity, so he considered the figures obtained during the fifth month of the year to be “positive.”

He justified the slow growth in hotel occupancy by explaining that new lodging establishments have opened in the past year, which also increases the number of unoccupied rooms and alters the average for each destination.
