Yucatecan youth activists will represent Mexico internationally by participating in the “Summit of Action against Plastic Pollution” organized by Fridays for Future Yucatán, Captain Planet Foundation, Planeteer Alliance, Wind Summit, and the Technological Institute of Mexico at the end of July.

On the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day, Julia Bracamontes Cetina, representative of Fridays for Future Yucatán, stated that this event will be replicated in different cities around the world with the aim of involving young people in the fight against planet pollution and reversing the environmental impacts caused by our dependency on plastic.

She explained that the event will be open to the public and will take place on Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, at the auditorium of the Technological Institute of Mérida. People, movements, and leaders committed to this cause will share their experiences and encourage attendees to take small actions that collectively create significant changes.

Bracamontes Cetina said that Plastic Pollution refers to the term used by the United Nations (UN) to describe the crisis caused by the excessive and unconscious use of plastic products.

“The intention is to have many people attend these recreational activities and dialogues, which aim to raise awareness and enable the public to take the message home about the importance of eradicating the pollution caused by plastic dependency,” she added.

Both days, the activities will start at 10 am and end at 4 pm. On Sunday, the Summit will also include an eco bazaar.

She warned that the issue of plastic goes beyond bags, bottles, and Styrofoam packaging seen in cities and on roadsides. The major impact is found in the oceans and in the microplastics generated by this type of waste, which living organisms are consuming.

“There have been studies that have proven the presence of microplastics in the bodies of different living beings. It has even been found that human placentas contain microplastics. That’s why we must not overlook small actions that have significant impacts,” she emphasized.
