Yucatecan senator, Raúl Paz Alonzo, made an urgent call to take care of the mangroves in Yucatán as a fundamental measure to preserve the environment and guarantee sustainable development in the region.

The legislator expressed his concern about the serious threat facing mangroves in different areas of the state, due to inadequate territorial development and real estate projects along the Yucatan peninsula.

Within the framework of the International Day for the Protection of the Mangrove Ecosystem (July 26th), he called on society to get involved and demand that the authorities protect and conserve it.

Paz Alonzo highlighted the importance of mangroves as regulators of water quality on the coasts, maintainers of fishing grounds, shelter for various species of plants and animals, and essential for food security in the region.

In addition, he underlined its crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change in places like Yucatán, an area exposed to hurricanes.

According to official data, Mexico has 5 percent of the world’s total mangroves, which places the country in 4th place among 125 countries and territories with this type of wetland.
However, it is estimated that thousands of hectares of this ecosystem have been lost in the country in recent years.

The senator highlighted the efforts promoted by the Upper House to favor the environmental sustainability of the national territory.

Likewise, he highlighted the commitment of Mexico as a member country of the Ramsar Convention, which seeks the conservation and protection of wetlands, in order to ensure sustainable development for future generations.

“If we want the well-being of our people and achieve shared prosperity, it is vital to take responsible actions to preserve the environment in Yucatan. The deforestation of mangroves is a clear example of the damage to which we are exposed, and it is something that we must regulate for the well-being of future generations,” said the senator.

The legislator emphasized that collaboration between civil society and the different levels of government is necessary to establish adequate regulation, as well as to promote awareness and quality environmental education for the benefit of sustainable development in the region.
