The forecast for the summer vacation has been exceeded, with two weeks of the holiday period remaining, in addition to the one that just ended on Sunday, August 13th.
Big Data predicted that 32 people from Yucatan would die in traffic accidents between July and August; as of the 11th of this month, the number has reached 37.
After 42 days of vacation, the average is one death every 27 hours. In the first 19 days, it was one fatality every 24 hours, and in the following 23 days, one casualty every 30 hours.
So far, the breakdown for the summer includes 21 motorcyclists, eight passengers or companions, five drivers, two pedestrians, and one cyclist, all of whom died in traffic accidents. In the mentioned period, the number of motorcyclists fatally injured increased from 14 to 21. A 50 percent increase.
“Unfortunately, Big Data has caught up with us and exceeded our expectations,” lamented traffic engineer René Flores Ayora when sharing the statistics. With 15 more days to go, it is expected that the 42 fatal victims from last year will be exceeded.
The total for the year so far is 178 fatal victims in 224 days, with an average of one death every 30 hours. Thus, 77.3 percent of the total deaths from last year, which were 230, have already been reached.
Breakdown
The breakdown is as follows: 92 motorcyclists have lost their lives, 27 drivers, 26 pedestrians, 23 passengers or companions, and 10 cyclists.
During the 2023 Easter and Holy Week vacation period, 12 deaths were estimated, but the actual number was 17, which meant an increase of 41.6 percent. With the forecast exceeded, the current increase is 15.6 percent, which could reach 31.2 percent if the 2022 figure is matched.
If the current pace of vacation fatalities, one death every 27 hours, continues, it is estimated that there will be 13 more deaths during the remaining holiday period, resulting in a total of 50 fatal cases, which is 56 percent more than predicted by Big Data.
