A tortoise weighing over one hundred kilos from the “Carey” species was found in poor health conditions on the coast of Chuburná, in the municipality of Progreso. A wound on its head was the reason why the female specimen ended up stranded, seeking attention.
The discovery was made by residents who noticed the ailing sea turtle. They immediately called 911 for assistance. Soon after, an operation was launched by various authorities, including the Secretariat of Public Security, the Ecological Police, and the Directorate of Public Security and Municipal Transit.
The presence of the officers caught the attention of some beachgoers who were still in the area despite the vacation period having ended. This attracted several curious onlookers who received instructions from the ecological agents’ personnel. Given the seriousness of the situation, a transfer protocol was necessary.
The large turtle was taken to Cetmar College number 17, where Professor and Biologist Carlos León Aguilar is engaged in various activities to support these species through a turtle camp.
The reasons for the turtle ending up in such conditions may have been due to the traffic of small boats near the coast, as they search for cephalopods in the surrounding sea. These species are susceptible to collisions, as many of them still come ashore to lay their nests.
