During the last 12 months, from July 2022 to June 2023, a total of 61,048 vehicles have been stolen throughout the Mexican Republic, as reported by the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).
It’s important to note that these units are insured, but there is a significant increase in thefts of heavy equipment such as trucks and motorcycles. According to AMIS, these figures represent a 0.9 percent annual increase.
Regarding the theft of heavy equipment, there was a 26 percent increase, reaching 8,834 units from July 2022 to June 2023. In the case of motorcycle thefts, there was an 18 percent increase, totaling 5,361.
AMIS’s management points out that criminals used violence in 55.6 percent of vehicle thefts during this period, and it was often when the owners were on board the vehicle.
In this context, the states with the highest rates of violent vehicle theft are Sinaloa, Zacatecas, and Guerrero.
Additionally, this institution indicates that stolen motorcycles and cars are often used to commit other crimes such as kidnapping or executions, as well as supplying the market with parts of illicit origin.
Moreover, motorcycle thefts impact small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) because these units are often used for their deliveries.
