President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged the efforts of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal in addressing inequality in Yucatán by achieving a higher increase in family incomes compared to other states in the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
During his traditional morning press conference, the President recognized that the Southeastern states have experienced the highest economic growth, resulting from the public investment they undertake, as seen in Yucatán where family incomes saw a larger increase than in other parts of the country.
This historic reduction in inequality, where those with lower incomes are experiencing higher gains, is an outcome of the programs and initiatives propelled by the Mauricio Vila’s government to enhance opportunities and attract projects that generate quality employment to impact the lives of Yucatecans.
According to the Inegi report, the state showed a -9.4 percent decrease in the Gini index, a measure of income inequality among a region’s inhabitants within a specific time frame.
In Yucatán’s case, the Inegi study revealed that in comparison to the national situation, wage inequality decreased three times more than the rest of the country, which only achieved a -3.1 percent decrease.
These data reflect the historic moment Yucatán is undergoing, as 2021 witnessed its best year in economic growth and job creation. Furthermore, 2022 marked an unprecedented influx of foreign direct investment, tourist arrivals, and other significant indicators.
