Personnel from the Secretariat of the Navy set sail aboard a smaller vessel, type Defender, accompanied by personnel from the Port Captaincy of Sisal, to reach the location of the grounding, in order to verify potential damages and gather relevant information regarding the incident.
Likewise, in coordination with personnel from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), a presence has been maintained in the area aboard Surface Units of the Mexican Navy, in order to conduct a continuous assessment of possible damages to the Madagascar reef.
According to reports, it has been confirmed that no signs of hydrocarbon or oil contamination have been identified so far. In the same manner, the Secretariat of the Navy continues to collaborate with the corresponding authorities during the monitoring of the incident, as well as the care and protection of the reef and its marine environment.
It is important to mention that on July 28th, a meeting was held with various authorities and the company “SMIT SALVAGE AMERICAN LCC,” which presented the ship refloating plan, which was analyzed and approved by the relevant authorities. Once this plan is executed, the area will be reevaluated. Additionally, the company will be held responsible for any resulting damages. It should be noted that the Mexican Navy has a vessel deployed in the vicinity of the site on a permanent basis.
