In order to continue with environmental initiatives and comply with relevant health regulations, Cultur, under the supervision of the Yucatan Health Services (SSY), carried out the ‘2023 Third Buttathon’ at the Meteorite Museum today, where they successfully gathered 3,750 residues that were polluting the soil and subsoil.
The objective is for Cultur to achieve its third recognition from the SSY as a ‘100% Smoke-Free and Emission-Free Building.’ They have previously achieved this at the Siglo XXI Convention Center and the Chichén Itzá visitor center.
The event, led by the general director of the organization, Mauricio Díaz Montalvo, began at 10 a.m. at one of the main entrances, along the Progreso boardwalk. Around 35 people participated, including department directors, personnel from the tourist site, and central office staff.
During the protocol before the butt collection tour, Psychologist Shanny Cámara Canto thanked Cultur for continuing this event. “It’s evident that they’ve taken it seriously, and for us, it’s very gratifying,” she expressed.
Díaz Montalvo mentioned that he was pleased to have adopted this program, as it’s not only about decontaminating the soil and subsoil, but also about raising awareness among more people to prevent them from discarding their cigarette butts, which sometimes lead to fires and other unwanted consequences.
Following the respective protocol, the kickoff for the activities was given. Two work teams were formed, each taking a different route. The collection route covered not only the interior of the building but also the observation deck and the surrounding streets.
The cigarette butts were placed in black garbage bags, and then designated personnel took care of placing them in half-liter bottles – a total of 15 bottles were filled. At the end of the collection tour, Díaz Montalvo formally handed over all the cigarette butts to the SSY representative.
As was done at Siglo XXI and Chichén visitor center, all the collected cigarette butts, which are under the custody of the SSY, will be subsequently delivered to architect Miranda Jacqueline Escalante Moguel. She will be responsible for transforming them into a work of art.”
