Currently, 98% of certified guides in the state provide their services at Chichen Itza and Merida, stated Jorge Lerma Nava, Undersecretary of Sustainable Tourism Development at the Ministry of Tourism Development.

The Ministry of Tourism Development (Sefotur) is making efforts to decentralize guides and have them provide their services in the seven Magical Towns of Yucatan, at the beach destinations along the 378 kilometers of coastline, and there’s even talk of the possibility of offering a course to these professionals within NOM 09, which focuses on nature tourism.

The official led the ceremony where 18 Yucatan tourist guides graduated from a certification course in NOM 08 Tourism.

Likewise, the official considered it important that the promotion of these trained guides counteracts the counterfeiting of credentials and the practice of individuals who are not properly prepared, certified, and accredited. An official Mexican standard (NOM) compliant guide must revalidate their level every four years.

The official emphasized to the newly accredited individuals that the Mayan Train will soon be in operation, initially covering the northern stretch of Quintana Roo and Yucatan. This will result in high demand for their services. He also reiterated the need to work closely with Maya-speaking communities to foster tourist experiences where visitors can interact with the inhabitants of these settlements and have unique experiences alongside them.

Three months of hard work, 550 effective hours of classes and activities, including sacrificing their Sundays, have been part of the effort put in by 18 Yucatan tourist guides who obtained the federal certification NOM 08 Tourism. This certification recognizes them as professionals in this field, capable of performing their duties anywhere in the Mexican Republic.

The national and state tourism ministries, in coordination with the Latin American Center for Training and Capacity Building for Tourist Guides (Cenlatur) and the Felipe Carrillo Puerto University Center, were in charge of developing the program. The goal is to professionalize the human resource dedicated to providing assistance to local, national, and foreign tourists. This ensures that tourists always receive the most accurate and up-to-date information about historical and cultural sites, not only in Yucatan but throughout the country.

With these 18 newly certified guides, Yucatan now has a total of 818 officially recognized guides, as per the credentials issued by the national Ministry of Tourism. This places the state among the top five in the country with the most guides, alongside Mexico State, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, and Chiapas.

Those who completed their training are currently processing their official credentials.

Jorge Belmonte, director of Cenlatur, and Jorge Lerma Nava, Undersecretary of Sustainable Tourism Development at Sefotur, explained that training professional human resources in the field of tourism, specifically regarding tourist guides, is a serious and delicate matter. Today, guides must possess comprehensive knowledge of a culture and history, alongside proficiency in English. They also need to understand human relations, group management, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), archaeology, architecture, and more.

The certification course classes were held at the facilities of the Felipe Carrillo Puerto University Center. On behalf of the institution, Andrea Becerra Bazán, the school’s sub-director of organizational development, congratulated the certified guides and encouraged them to put forth their utmost effort for the development of this important activity in Yucatan.

Students Lucia Quiñones Cetina and Mabel Nolasco Morales explained that the course has been very intense but well worth it, as the state requires well-prepared tourist guides capable of providing visitors with the experience they expect and the friendly treatment that characterizes the people of Yucatan. They acknowledged feeling proud of their state and all that it offers. They chose this profession because it allows them to develop professionally in a very special and important field that lets them talk about Yucatan, its identity, its sites, its history, and in a way, showcase what makes this land and its people special.
