Hugo López-Gatell, COVID-19’s ‘pandemic czar’, is leaving the Ministry of Health. The news was confirmed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in his ‘mañanera’ this September 22.
“Yes, Dr. López-Gatell told me (about his aspirations) I don’t know (when he will resign), but I think he is going to say goodbye,” said the president when he was questioned on the subject.
La Jornada published this Friday an interview in which the undersecretary of Health ‘uncovered’ himself and announced that he will seek to be the coordinator of the committees for the defense of the transformation in Mexico City.
“I, along with a group of colleagues from the movement, have been analyzing the social and political situation of Mexico City, and we have identified which avenues we should take, as Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum said, to build the second floor of the transformation,” he said.
The president commented that a group of 10 government officials have already informed him of their intentions to resign in the next few days to participate in Morena’s internal process to choose the coordinators to defend the transformation in the nine states that will elect governors and head of government in 2024.
“First, thank you all. Imagine what you have helped me. They are all good public servants and supported me in very difficult moments,” he added.
Which federal officials have already announced that they will leave the government?
Among them is Rocío Nahle, Secretary of Energy, who announced in an interview with Joaquín López-Dóriga that she will participate in the Morena process in Veracruz.
“I was deputy for Veracruz in Coatzacoalcos in the first Morena legislature and the 11th district was very generous with me, I competed for the senate and Veracruz always gave me its support, I owe a lot to Veracruz,” she stated.
Another official who will be leaving his post is Javier May, head of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism, who was ‘uncovered’ by President López Obrador in one of his ‘mornings’.
“Javier closes a cycle, he is going to return to Tabasco, he is thinking (about the governorship) and he has the right because here there is no ‘dedazo’, the people decide, but I do want to thank him for all his support”, he declared last September 4.
