To commemorate 15 years of providing assistance, guidance, and support to individuals battling breast cancer, the Tócate México Foundation is offering free mammograms at Plaza Grande in Mérida throughout the month of October. This initiative has been instrumental in promoting early detection of breast cancer and providing various free services.
Alejandra Gutiérrez Blanco, President of the Private Assistance Institution, expressed her gratitude to the Mayor of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, for joining as a spokesperson and ambassador for the foundation’s activities in 2023. He also signed a collaboration agreement, contributing to making these cost-free medical sessions possible.
The mobile mammography unit will be set up from October 4th to October 31st in Plaza Grande, where women can come to undergo the necessary checkups and rule out any anomalies. Additionally, a free awareness talk will be held at 6 p.m. on October 2nd, followed by the lighting of Mérida’s Municipal Palace in pink.
Gutiérrez Blanco highlighted that over the past 15 years, approximately 33,558 medical and social services were provided for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. These services included mammograms, and ultrasounds, and benefited residents of 42 municipalities, 13 communities, and 135 neighborhoods across Yucatán.
According to data up to October 2022, nearly 1,500 women in Yucatán were diagnosed with breast cancer, and 118 of them unfortunately passed away. While the mortality rate has decreased in recent years in Mexico, there has been an increase in the number of diagnosed cases, especially among younger women. This underscores the importance of campaigns like Tócate México, which aims to reach young people.
The activities for the Tócate 15th Anniversary Campaign include free breast exams at the Women’s Support Center of the Municipal Government of Mérida throughout October. On October 19th, the Monumento a la Patria (Monument to the Homeland) will be illuminated in pink as a commemorative event in memory of those who have lost their battle to breast cancer and as a reminder to perform monthly self-examinations. A group photo with ambassadors from each of the 15 years will also be taken.
Furthermore, a gala dinner to benefit the foundation will be held on October 27th, and the Pink Run will take place on October 29th. Throughout October, supermarket customers in Yucatán will have the option to round up their purchases, with the proceeds going towards breast cancer detection. The municipal palaces of Ticul, Tizimín, Tekax, Teabo will also be illuminated in pink, and awareness talks will be conducted in various companies, including Tere Cazola, Michel Accesorios, Amaité, Grupo Infra, Bepensa, Torritos, among others.
