Fashion Week is a series of highly anticipated events in the fashion industry held biannually, showcasing the latest collections from renowned designers and emerging talents. These events are divided into two major seasons: Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. In September, we typically witness the unveiling of Spring/Summer collections.

This month marks the transition from heavier winter fabrics to lighter, more vibrant materials, reflecting the upcoming season’s trends. Designers use this platform to introduce fresh styles, colors, and silhouettes, setting the tone for the fashion trends that will dominate the following year’s warm months. Fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders eagerly anticipate September Fashion Weeks for a glimpse of what’s to come in the world of style and design.

Fashion shows have evolved beyond their traditional role, now encompassing elements of concerts, performances, celebrity gatherings, and even lively parties. The advent of social media has brought a profound transformation to the fashion industry, shifting the focus of designers from merely creating the most acclaimed or coveted collections to actively seeking viral moments that can become social media sensations, yielding substantial impact. As September commences and New York Fashion Week kicks off the fashion calendar, it’s unsurprising that several memorable occurrences have already left their mark.

From Ralph Lauren’s highly anticipated return to the New York runway after a two-year hiatus to the unexpected live performance by Sia amidst a fashion show, let’s recap and summarize the highlights of this current iteration of New York Fashion Week:

Ralph Lauren’s comeback in New York since 2019 garnered significant attention in the fashion week schedule. While some critics noted the collection’s lack of cohesion, others celebrated the continuous presence of striking golden designs. A noteworthy viral moment occurred when top model Christy Turlington, who closed the show, had her dress train accidentally stepped on by the model following her, resulting in an amusing viral incident.

The Collina Strada show featured models sporting broad smiles that competed for attention with the showcased garments, a departure from the typical seriousness on the runway. The addition of impromptu dances during the show elevated its visual appeal, making it one of the standout events of the fashion week.

The iconic Rockefeller Center served as the unconventional runway location for the Los Angeles-based brand known for its genderless designs. While it wasn’t the first time the renowned New York landmark was transformed into a fashion runway, it was equally groundbreaking, as the brand founders, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta, creatively utilized the building’s expansive escalators to present their models.

Sia, the singer, surprised attendees at Christian Siriano’s show with a spontaneous performance of her hit song “Diamonds.” She appeared on stage in a striking maxi tulle dress, donning one of her distinctive wigs that covered her eyes, requiring assistance to reach the microphone. This collaboration showcased the close friendship between the singer and the designer, who had previously created her wedding dress in just two days back in 2014.

Peter Do, a designer whose name has been consistently lauded in fashion circles for years, made his highly anticipated debut after being announced as the creative force behind an iconic brand in May. The collection found its inspiration in New York City, drawing from its iconic yellow taxis and the minimalist, predominantly all-black fashion sensibilities of its inhabitants. Notably, this show provided a rare glimpse of the designer himself, as he has been notoriously camera-shy, granting limited photographic access.
