Even though on Saturday, September 2nd, many families went there to do their shopping, the San Benito market in Mérida offered a desolate panorama, vacant stalls, without merchants, without business.
On the first level section destined for fruit and vegetable vendors and other products, there was no one. Only the unoccupied mini-stalls and makeshift metal structures mounted on the concrete slabs that once served as merchandise displays are visible.
Other stalls serve only as spaces to store merchandise that their owners sell outside the municipal market, which has always been criticized for its bad design and poor architectural planning.
Many Yucatecans know that San Benito is not famous for its hygiene, cleanliness, and security, and this can be confirmed by the tenants themselves.
“This administration is very bad; there are no janitors, the garbage is piled up, the place is visibly dirty, it stinks and they don’t fix it, there is no surveillance either, os it is unsafe, that’s a big problem, the lack of surveillance, there is no police around the area at all,” declared one of the tenants
Users pointed out that people do not come to San Benito because there are not many vendors, plus you have to walk a long way to get there.
The merchants of the San Benito market complain that their sales have decreased due to the number of street vendors in the main square of the city, people no longer want to walk all the way down to the market.
Another problem is the mud that is generated during the rainy season. These people ask the authorities to improve the working conditions in San Benito, most tourists leave the market because they find it dirty and in bad condition.
