A Progreso gas station worker was seriously injured when a gas tank in poor condition that he was refilling exploded. The dispatcher, identified as Manuel A., was taken to a hospital for treatment because of his severe burns.

According to the police sources, the Maya Gas company worker was refilling a 15-kilo gas tank when it exploded, causing burns to various parts of his body.

The accident occurred on 101st Street between 72nd and 74th, where paramedics from the Red Cross delegation arrived to treat Manuel, 32 years old, who, due to his injuries, had to be transferred to a hospital in the city.

Agents of the Municipal Police were in charge of collecting data on what happened, and municipal Civil Protection staff as well.

Hotel occupancy will detonate with the Festival de las Animas

Because the Festival de las Animas (The Spirits Festival) is one of the city’s best-positioned tourism products at a national and international level, hotel occupancy for this edition is expected to reach 70%, especially on the weekend when the traditional Paseo de las Ánimas (Walk of the spirits) takes place.

According to José Luis Martínez Semerena, head of the Directorate of Economic Development and Tourism of the City Council of Mérida, this event begins a period that they call the cool months of the year since it is a time in which many people arrive from the Mexican Republic, as well as foreign tourists, especially Asians, who will be recording and documenting that moment.

He indicated that the Festival is one of the best positioned nationally since it competes with that of Michoacán and Xcaret.

He commented that for this edition an increase of 15% is expected in the number of national and foreign tourists, especially due to the air connection with Bajío, Puebla, and Querétaro, coupled with the fact that tourists from Japan, China, and South Korea have set aside these dates to arrive in the city, according to travel agencies.

“In hotel occupancy, normally this month there is around 55% occupancy, but thanks to an event like the Paseo de las Ánimas, up to 70% occupancy is reached in the city and more in the area of the Barrio Mágico (Magical Neighborhood) of La Ermita “, indicated Martínez Semerena.
