The Municipality of Mérida, and the Astronomical Society of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY) have announced that there will be various observation points to witness the annular solar eclipse on Saturday, October 14.
For this astronomical event, the Municipality and UADY have outlined an observation point program at the Archaeological Park of Hacienda Anicabil, located in the Ciudad Caucel neighborhood, and at the Archaeological Park Chen Hó, also known as Recreativo de Oriente. Additionally, there will be talks led by members of the Astronomical Society from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
At the Cuxtal Ecological Reserve, located at Hacienda San Nicolás Dzoyaxché, there will be telescopes for observing the annular solar eclipse on Saturday, October 14. At 09:30 AM, there will be food sales, at 11:25 AM, the eclipse will be observed at its maximum point, and at 12:00 PM, a Mayan ball game called Pok ta Pok will be played.
The Directorate of Municipal Public Services will offer an ancestral Mayan ceremony at the facilities of the Animaya Bicentennial Zoo at 09:00 AM. Those interested in participating should wear white clothing without accessories and be aware that the ceremony will last approximately two hours.
Both at Animaya and the Centenario Zoo, you can observe the behavior of animals during the phenomenon. Especially those that are active during the day, such as birds, insects, and fish, may suspend their activities and seek shelter, while nocturnal animals may come out of their shelters.
Common behaviors include birds becoming restless and starting to vocalize, insects returning to their nests or burrows, fish stopping eating and swimming, bats leaving their caves in search of food, owls using this moment to hunt, wolves howling, and hippos leaving the water to rest on the shore.
To attend these activities, it is recommended not to look directly at this astronomical phenomenon at any time. Use certified glasses that allow observation for around 30 seconds, and avoid using sunglasses, dark glasses, water, aluminum foil, binoculars, cameras, smoked glass, polarized filters, telescopes, or exposed color films.
