Design with roots Bomboti brings together in a single space the creative art of designers, architects, and even chefs. We talked to one of its founders, Regina Galván Duque.

Bomboti is a project born as a result of 20 years of interdisciplinary collaboration. A studio gallery that hosts and displays the work of artisans and artists. The word that gives rise to the name of this space means in Otomi black and earth, that “which gives all the resources to the project, says one of its founders, Regina Galvanduque. Together, architects, designers, chefs, sculptors, weavers, and artists celebrate materiality, technique, and creativity in a gallery where there are only artists.

Several disciplines are mixed here and pieces from Oaxaca or Chiapas are offered. “It is a canvas that shows the work of our collaborators and pays tribute to them,” says Regina and adds: “We look for people from each region for each project and reduce the carbon footprint.

The idea is to support the locals. That’s how we creatives should think to help the planet.” “The space has three floors, at street level we find a casual miscellany that celebrates our travels through Mexico, textile details, gastronomy, design, small objects, casual gifts, accessible, it’s like the little shop of the museum,” says Galvanduque enthusiastically. “On the second floor we have the gallery store which is a mix of all these disciplines, and we pay tribute to master craftsmen, potters, the trades; on the terrace, the plants and the green part with outdoor furniture.

On the third floor there is a greenhouse, where there will be talks, workshops, dialogue, a space for encounters,” he explains. The backbone of this project is the studio of Andrés Mier y Terán and Regina Galvanduque MYT +GLVDK, as well as their design team. They all did industrial design, branding, and architecture, but art was missing; Pablo Cobo, a sculptor and art curator who helps curate the artistic part of the projects, joined them. It is a union that strengthens its projects in terms of interior design.

At Bomboti there is a wide variety of accessories and objects such as black clay from Oaxaca, products by Suculenta, clay and enamel works by ceramist Gabriela Flores, wines curated by Brutal, a neighborhood wine space in San Miguel de Allende, as well as creations by Isabel Sánchez, a disciple of master Francisco Toledo. Bomboti brings together a group of very passionate and talented people.

But their proposal does not stop there, there is also fashion and a sewing workshop. The line of bath products is in charge of Yucatán Senses, with very careful handmade cosmetics. We also find “pineapples” painted by Javier Marín for Bomboti, which coexist with rustic furniture found in the villages. Also concrete furniture and complements to decorate restaurants in a genuine way as they did with Cocina Abierta or the Japanese Ishi-ko in Monte Athos, recently designed. The works of industrial designers coexist with sculptures by Diego Madrazo, who left his career as a lawyer for carpentry.

Other products are pieces from one of the best glass factories, Nouvel Studio, the second-largest glass factory in the world and in Mexico City. Tapetes de Teotitlán del Valle, with master craftsman Beto Ruíz, grandchildren of artisan blacksmiths, potters, or carpenters propose a new look at ancestral craftsmanship. Taller Coatlicue is already a seal of international prestige where clay is elevated to a work of art; a table inspired by ceiba wood is prepared there. Bomboti is visited by restaurant owners, homeowners, and private individuals.

Finally, there is also space for auditory delight with the sound of Margules, who is also present in this space of excellence for the five senses. The place has exceptional acoustics to feel how this great tribute to art, creativity, and craftsmanship that is inspired by the land and its roots vibrates. A legacy of generations with an avant-garde air.
