To learn about the movement and good practices in logistics that can be implemented with the expansion of the Progreso Deep Sea Port, to detonate economic development, industry, and tourism, and generate more and better jobs in Yucatán, Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal visited the Port of Singapore, considered one of the largest in the world.
On the third day of his trade mission to this country, the governor met with Alfred Sim, vice president of business development at the company PSA Global, which currently handles about a seventh of the world’s total container transshipment. In addition, it operates five container terminals in Singapore and has a network of 200 shipping lines with connections to 600 ports in 123 countries. It has a presence in 50 terminals (coastal and dry ports) in 19 countries around the world.
Singapore is one of the busiest trans-shipment hubs in the world, with traffic of 37.3 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEU). During 2021, a total of 37.5 million containers, equivalent to 599 million tonnes of cargo, passed through the port of Singapore, making it the busiest transshipment hub in the world.
In this framework, Vila Dosal presented the advantages of the privileged geographical location that the state has, as well as the logistics that it offers to the region, which will increase with the expansion of the Progreso Altura Port, a project that will put Yucatán at the forefront in a matter of port logistics, generating greater connectivity with the country and the entire world, opening new doors to tourism and national and international trade.
Together with the head of the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor (Sefoet), Ernesto Herrera Novelo, Governor Mauricio Vila presented the project that consists of expanding the platform from 32 to 72 hectares; In addition, the depth of the navigation channel will be increased from 9.75 meters to a depth of 12.5 meters and the width of the access channel will be expanded from 150 to 180 meters, which will allow us to receive cruise ships from 4,500 to 9,000 passengers and cargo ships from 40 thousand tons to 100 thousand tons.
Right there, Vila Dosal was able to verify that, as in Yucatán, the Government of Singapore built an elevated viaduct to speed up all the cargo leaving the port, to prevent the entire port from collapsing.
“This reminds us that we are also building a 2.7-kilometer elevated viaduct in the port of Progreso to be able to remove all the trucks that enter and leave so they can do so more quickly. Also, like the Progreso viaduct project, this has a linear park around it, which not only provides a solution to the passage of trucks and trailers but also greatly improves the urban image of the area. This gives us confidence that the projects we are doing in Yucatán are appropriate,” he stated.
Accompanied by Alfred Sim, the governor visited the Port of Singapore, which covers around 550 hectares, and in which everything is done automatically. Currently, they are building a new port of 1,300 hectares, with which they are planning to go from 50 million containers to 65 million.
As part of his work agenda for Singapore, Vila Dosal held a work meeting with Lennon Tan, president of the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF), the largest national organization representing the interests of manufacturing industries since 1932, with more than 5 thousand corporate members in Singapore.
Together with the presidents of the Association of Export Maquiladoras of Yucatán (Index), Alejandro Guerrero Lozano; from the National Chamber of the Clothing Industry of Yucatán (Canaive), Jorge Moreno González; of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra); Arturo Peniche Solís, from the Yucatecan company Arpen SPR; Víctor Juan Zacarías Solís and Feud Zacarías Solís, from the National Chamber of the Fishing Industry (Canainpesca), the Governor presented the state’s competitive logistical advantages, legal certainty and qualified labor that make Yucatán the ideal state for investment.
There, he presented some of the projects that are improving competitiveness and the generation of opportunities with better-paying jobs; such as the Maya Train, the expansion of the Puerto de Altura and the construction of two combined cycle energy plants, and the professionalization and training of human capital.
Yucatán became the Mexican state with the highest growth in monthly wages in the manufacturing, Maquiladora and export services industries.
By 2022, the entity’s manufacturing exports reached a value of 1,199 million dollars, a growth of 12.1 percent compared to 2021, and employment in the secondary sector amounted to 323,196 workers, which represented an increase of 5 thousand 907 compared to the previous period.
During the past year, projects arrived in the entity like never before, with a historical figure in foreign direct investment of 535.9 million dollars in flow, the highest figure in local history, which represented 268.2 percent more compared to 2021, according to the Federal Ministry of Economy (SE).
For his part, the president of the SMF made a presentation in which he mentioned that Singapore invests and develops products, which is why they make agreements with foreign manufacturing companies or invest directly in establishing their factories in destinations that offer competitive advantages to be able to meet the standards requested by its buyers internationally.
It was mentioned that due to the situation with China, Singapore companies are working on their expansion strategies to destinations close to the United States and one of the natural countries is Mexico.
