Migrants marched this Friday on the southern border to demand humanitarian solutions during the migration summit convened by the Government of Mexico for representatives of 11 other Latin American countries.

At the demonstration in Ciudad Hidalgo, activist Irineo Mujica, director of the Pueblos Sin Fronteras association, considered it a summit of “shame and corruption” for the death of hundreds of migrants each year on the migratory route.

“The migrants want to collect that blood, that pain, that walk, that is why they march from Ciudad Hidalgo to Tapachula, located about 58 kilometers from the Suchiate River, which has become a hell for migrants, marked by violence, extortion, and corruption of the National Migration Institute (INM),” he said.

Venezuelan Silvio Bustamante, who entered Mexico during the early hours of this Friday through the rafts of the Suchiate River, joined this march to ask the rulers for a better future since in Venezuela salaries are low.

“If we walk the Darién, which is a river, water, dead people, and animals, why not walk here (in Mexico)? We are not going to stop. (We must) move forward, since we want to work and well-being for our family,” he stated.
