Octopus fishing is 40 percent below last year’s levels, according to José Luis Carrillo Galaz, President of the Board of the Mexican Confederation of Fishing and Aquaculture Cooperatives (Conmecoop).

He stated that octopus fishing is 30 to 40 percent below expectations for this time of the year. As of October 11th, they had caught 8,948.55 tons, and he emphasized that things are looking grim as strong northern winds are approaching, bringing more instability.

“The outlook is bleak, and I don’t believe it will improve. While fishing boats might increase their production, the coastal areas won’t. In fact, we are dependent on them. Regarding the price, it ranges between 95 and 100 pesos.”

He mentioned that Inapesca has allocated the same quota as last year, which was 21,000 tons, and they are unsure if they can meet it. He added that this quota is low compared to previous years when they used to catch 30 to 34 thousand tons. Despite its low level, he doesn’t believe they will reach the target.

Similarly, he mentioned that the European market has not opened much, so very little or almost nothing is being exported there.

“We don’t have many markets in Europe; not much or almost nothing is being sent there. Everything is moving in the domestic market, fortunately, even though the price is low, it allows for some profit to survive.”
