Once again, residents of the rural area of Othón P. Blanco municipality blocked the federal Chetumal-Escárcega highway, at the Francisco Villa village, due to constant power outages that have left them without electricity for several days.

Since six in the morning on Wednesday, October 4th, more than 200 residents from Francisco Villa, Nicolás Bravo, Dos Aguadas, San Pedro Peralta, and six other communities arrived at this communication route to demand the presence of personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) because they have been without electricity supply since last Saturday.

With no favorable response, the protesters began placing rocks, logs, and tires to block vehicular traffic starting at 10 in the morning, allowing passage only in small groups every 10 minutes.

At 10:50, State Police and National Guard officers arrived to reach an agreement with the demonstrators since this blockade was delaying the works of the Tren Maya and causing significant economic disruptions, as it is one of the main access routes to Quintana Roo.

However, the residents of Francisco Villa warned the officers that they would not clear the road until the CFE commits to repairing and maintaining the electrical infrastructure in the area, which was damaged during heavy rains and thunderstorms last week.

They also requested that the officials responsible for the Tren Maya in section 07 improve their supervision of the companies transporting materials as the dump truck operators have also caused serious damage.

After a few hours, representatives from the State Government and the Federal Electricity Commission arrived to reach an agreement that led to the road’s reopening.

This is the seventh road blockade in this area, caused by interruptions in the electricity supply.
