According to a travel consultant, Airbnb vacation rental units are being offered in at least 28 regions considered as “ risk areas ” due to their high crime rates.
Emir Gutiérrez Pantoja, designated consultant for the Mexican Caribbean of “Travel Gud-Mex”, explained that after carrying out geolocation work they found more than 6 thousand Airbnb units in areas such as Villas Otoch and Villas del Mar, as well as regions 202 and 205. , from Cancun; the Doctores neighborhood, Colonia Alfredo V. Bonfil; as well as in Colonia Colosio and Villas del Sol, in Playa del Carmen.
He pointed out that this is because the platform does not verify the area of the city where the host offers his accommodations, in addition to the fact that although attempts have been made to eliminate fraudulent images on Airbnb, it is still very easy to deceive users with photographies of the interior part of the house and some “pleasant part” of the neighborhood, but without mentioning the danger of staying there.
Julián Ricalde Magaña, president of the Legislative Tourism Commission, mentioned that for this reason, they are analyzing a bill that aims to regulate this type of accommodation.
He cited that these restrictions are to guarantee the safety of tourists arriving in Quintana Roo, in addition to avoiding situations that could further damage the image of this travel destination.
