The president of the Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute (Iepac), Moisés Bates Aguilar, said that only one of the seven citizens who presented their intention to participate as independent candidates managed to move on to the next phase of the process.

In an interview, the electoral advisor reported that it is the citizen, José Francisco Marrufo Matú, who will begin the process to seek citizen support and with the purpose of accessing the candidacy for the state government, for which, he must present 2% of the state’s electoral roll, that is, 35 thousand signatures.

He pointed out that neither the citizen, Edgar Alfredo Cano Brito, nor the council for Telchac Puerto, Hunucmá, Temax, Mérida and Tetiz managed to meet the requirements set, so they did not access the next phase.

“They simply did not meet the requirements. There were minimum requirements to meet in this first stage, such as establishing a civil group, creating a bank account for inspection purposes and having a clean record before the Taxpayer Registry and, well, they did not accredit these requirements,” Marrufo Matú said.

He was questioned about the number of people who manage to access an independent candidacy, which remains low, to which he said that there would have to be a review in the State Congress of the provisions in the law to determine if it is necessary to relax the requirements for independent candidacies.

Marrufo Matú stated that, in the case of Iepac, it is immersed in the electoral process, which is why he indicated that the issue of independent candidates would be addressed in due course.

Marrufo Matú is an optometrist, but he is dedicated to processing and distributing bee products and advising companies. He is 52 years old, married with two daughters.

He is also local president of the Civil Association of Independent Citizen Candidates of the United Mexican States, which at the national level is chaired by Marciano Ramírez Trinidad.
