Authorities of the state government and the Rectorate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) yesterday inaugurated the building of the Museo de la Luz (Museum of Light of Mérida), the first attraction of the Gran Parque La Plancha.

State authorities unveiled the plaque alluding to this cultural building, whose start date for activities is November 1, 2023.

However, the Museum of Light did not open its doors to the public immediately after the inauguration and does not have all the technology and objects on the subject that show astrophysical science and the different facets of light.

Only one exhibition, already old and used in other years by this museum when it was in Mexico City, is all the art it features so far.

The exhibition is called “Color” and is sponsored by the Spanish company Telefónica, owner of the exhibition. However, the Telefónica company asked the authorities and the director of the Museum of Light not to place the logo of this foreign company due to the controversy and alleged irregularities detected in the construction of this building in La Plancha that amounts to more than $30 million.

These alleged irregularities, currently under investigation, had a consequence within the UNAM because the higher authorities dismissed Dr. César Domínguez, director of the General Directorate of Science Dissemination (DGDC) responsible for the project.

The irregularities detected under the administration of Dr. Domínguez are alleged diversions, embezzlement, opacity, impunity, and the cancellation of the participation of Conacyt, which demands the return of several million pesos of the investment.

Despite these financial and administrative irregularities at the Museum of Light in Mérida, the rector of UNAM, Enrique Luis Graue Wiechers, presided over the inauguration on November 1, 2023, together with the museum director, Ricardo Rubiales, and administrator Carlos Plancarte.

Precisely this mismanagement of the Museum of Light project made the inauguration almost secret and without the assistance of the press.
