The long weekend for Christmas celebrations led to an increase in the number of fatalities in traffic accidents, with more than triple what they had, going from four to 13.

But, when “added” on Tuesday, December 27, the fatal figure reached 16. As FOR THIS!, reported the “forecast” of deaths during the December holidays, according to the big data provided by road auditor René Flores Ayora, it is 33.

On the first weekend, there were only four, but by the end of Christmas Eve, the figure already represents almost 40 percent (39.3 percent) of the estimate. The annual balance is 261 deaths, 31 more than in the same period of 2022, and with the possibility of increasing.

For now, 11 motorcyclists, three cyclists, and two travelers or companions have already tragically died this month, recalled René Flores Ayora. In this way, in a week the death rate went from two to seven motorcyclists and one to three dead cyclists.

In recent days, FOR THIS!, published that a cyclist was run over on the Mérida-Tixkokob highway, while the driver of a tricycle had the same “bad luck” on the Mérida-Campeche road.

Last year, the December toll was 25 deaths, three more than expected: 18 motorcyclists, four pedestrians, three drivers, two travelers/companions, and one cyclist.

In the cumulative total of 2023, motorcyclists lead the classification of deaths with 141, 54 percent of the total. Likewise, it is an increase of 30 deaths on motorcycles, 27 percent at the moment, compared to the 111 that there were in 2022. They are followed by 41 pedestrians, 35 drivers, 30 travelers or companions, cars, and 14 cyclists and if an order is maintained, it will be very different from the previous year.

In 2022, pedestrians were in third place with 33 deaths, behind passengers (37), but above drivers, who were 28. Pedestrian deaths increased by 19.5 percent and drivers, by 20 percent, from one year to the next. another and drivers decreased by 21.6 percent.

René Flores considered that the fatal figure is “conservative” since there were years in which it exceeded 300. This happened in 2018 with 327 deaths, 2019 with 325, and 2021 with 320.

Currently, 2013 has also been surpassed with 249 fatalities, although it is far from the 2014 record, which had 280.
