When presiding over the fourth ordinary session of the Municipal Civil Protection Council, Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro recognized the collaborative work that exists between society and municipal authorities by working in coordination on programs that strengthen civil protection actions to safeguard the life and security of the Municipality’s families in the face of any environmental contingency.

At the official conclusion of the 2023 hurricane season for the Atlantic, the Municipal President emphasized that Mérida assumes the responsibility of consolidating the culture of prevention by strengthening the Municipal Civil Protection System, which has made it possible to establish alerts and follow up on the path of hurricanes that could threaten the area.

“We value and recognize teamwork so that, in close collaboration with federal and state authorities, we know that we have civil protection protocols that allow us to deal with possible contingencies,” he stressed.

Juan Ángel Mejía Gómez, technical director of the Yucatán Peninsula Basin Organization CONAGUA, pointed out that this season, although it was classified as intense, due to the influence of the phenomenon classified as “El Niño”, did not represent any major danger for the Yucatan Peninsula.

In that sense, he reported that in this year’s season, a lower cumulative rainfall was reported, which was 876.4 millimeters, compared to what was recorded in 2022, considering the historical accumulated average, which was 1023.2 millimeters.

The expert mentioned that, in summary, in the Atlantic, there were a total of 19 tropical cyclones out of the 16 that were predicted, while in the Pacific there were 17 of the 22 predicted, including the category 5 hurricane “Otis” that impacted the Mexican state of Guerrero.

“Here in the Atlantic we only had two impacts as such that were not as severe because the direction they took was very specific,” he added.
In addition to the above, Mejía Gómez highlighted that for the 2023 winter season, the presence of 56 cold fronts is forecast, of which 15 have already been recorded so far.
