The art collection was transferred to the Great Museum of the Mayan World in Mérida
MÉRIDA, Yuc.- The beautiful Casa Molina that is located in front of the La Mejorada park in Mérida, will no longer be the headquarters of the Museum of Popular Art of Yucatán (MAPY), after the agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the Arts of Yucatán and Fomento Cultural Citibanamex AC on the use of the property.
The collections housed in Casa Molina are being transferred to the Great Museum of the Mayan World in Mérida, and this would be the second transfer, since in 2007 the pieces were moved to Casa Molina from the then National Museum of Popular Cultures, which was located in the building annexed to the Ex-Convento de la Mejorada.
According to researchers, Casa Molina was built in 1908 for Mrs. Carmela Molina.
In this way, the talent of Mexican artisans will now be appreciated in the Great Museum of the Mayan World of Mérida (GMMMM), when starting in February 2024 it will also be the site of the Museum of Popular Art of Yucatán (MAPY).
Some of the pieces exhibited are by authors from Chiapas, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Mexico City, Tlaxcala and Yucatán, who share a vision of their culture with mostly unique pieces.
These creations are made of various materials and techniques such as ceramics, wood, glass, stone, natural fibers, metalwork, textiles, jewelry and paper that are presented in the form of masks, musical instruments, toys and clothing from different towns in Mexico.
The exhibition brings together objects made of copper, blown glass, samplers, trees of life, filigree, ternos, carved wood, rebozos, black clay, molcajetes, alebrijes, guild standards, talavera and traditional toys.
In addition, free workshops will also be offered to delve deeper into popular art and disseminate the work of the community of creators in our country among new generations.
