The management of the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá foresees an increase in visitors starting in the first half of December. That implies it could exceed the 2.5 million tourists registered a year ago.

In recent weeks, the place staff has noticed a slight increase in the arrival of both domestic and foreign tourists.

Even the tourist guides have begun to have more daily services, which means a good omen for them on these December dates.

José Francisco Osorio León, director of the archaeological zone, says that now the number of visitors is 7,000 to 10,000 people per day. He points out that everything seems to indicate that after the first half of December, it will increase “terribly.”

“The holidays are coming, and many people from central Mexico and part of Quintana Roo are going to visit Chichén; We are already seeing a rebound and it is not yet high season,” he says.

He adds that during summer vacation they register an entry of 17 thousand people in one day, so now that December is coming, which is the best season, more visitors will arrive, especially foreigners who flee from the snowfall and come to take refuge in Yucatán.

He says that if everything goes at this pace they will exceed last year’s 2.5 million, but they have also had to reach 3 to 5 million people in years since it also includes online sales.

On the other hand, he said that the opening of Chichén Viejo is captivating people who come exclusively to see it. He gives as an example that when Chichén Viejo opened, the first tourists were from Guanajuato, who reserved their pass only to enter that area.

“Those who come already know Chichén, but the initial series (Chichén Viejo) is a new area where important people lived, had their residence, and their rituals, it is another alternative that was not known in Chichén Itzá.”

“The tourist only knew its monumental buildings that are visible, but it was unknown how the people who directed the city’s destinies lived. We still need to investigate the areas where common people, merchants, postmen, and others lived.” He also announced that they are about to open the Great Museum of Chichén Itzá. “We are working on museography, collecting pieces, in a week at the latest we will be setting up the first rooms. So far it is the first museum that Chichén will have,” he said.
