The last week of 2023 will be full of meteorological contrasts. First because we will have some heat until midweek and later, because the incidence of a new winter phenomenon will begin.

Today, Tuesday, December 26th, the arrival of tropical maritime air will favor scattered light rains (less than 5 mm) in some areas of the region. Meanwhile, the “Ook” cold front (No. 19) will move slowly over the Gulf of Mexico. On Wednesday, “Ook” will be located very close to the Alacranes reef, so its pre-frontal trough will cause scattered strong storms (25 to 50 mm) in the northeast of Yucatán, central Campeche, northern Quintana Roo and southern from Tabasco.

Regarding temperature values, for the next two days maximums are expected in the range of 27 to 31 °C in the Yucatán Peninsula, and 26 to 29 °C in Tabasco, while the minimums will be 19 °C at 23 °C at regional level.

Afterwards, the “Ook” frontal system will travel through the Yucatan Peninsula from the early hours of Thursday and, in its wake, will leave scattered light rains (less than 5 mm) in most of the region, except in the south of Tabasco, where scattered strong storms (5 to 25 mm) are expected. Likewise, the continental polar air mass that will drive “Ook” will cause a moderate “Northerly” event throughout the region, from 20 to 50 km/h, with stronger gusts in coastal areas.

Exactly starting on Thursday there will be a notable decrease in temperature values throughout the region, which will be more noticeable as we approach the end of the year. In fact, it is estimated that “freezing” will be recorded at dawn on Saturday, mainly over the center of the Yucatan Peninsula, where minimum temperature values of 10 to 15 °C could be recorded, without ruling out specific values of 8 °C or 9 °C. It is even very likely that the “freezing” will last until the first day of 2024, so we invite you to take this situation into account for the old/new year festivities.

Finally, our meteorological analysis indicates that the arrival of frontal systems in the region will continue during the first week of January 2024, as the arrival of another winter phenomenon is projected for the first hours of Tuesday, January 2. We will keep you up to date with updates through Meteorología Yucatán’s social networks.
