Health services in the state are undergoing a significant transformation to strengthen medical care for Yucatecans and part of this initiative is the construction of the new “Dr. Agustín O’Horán”.
In a supervision tour of the work, accompanied by the mayor of Mérida, Alejandro Ruz Castro, and the head of the Yucatán Health Secretariat (SSY), Mauricio Sauri Vivas, Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal inspected the areas under development of the new hospital.
During the tour, the First Engineer and Construction Captain, Melior Marduk Chávez, offered detailed explanations about the different sections under construction by Sedena, highlighting the importance of this project to replace the old O’Horán hospital, inaugurated in 1906.
The new infrastructure, whose construction began last June and is located in the south of Mérida, is projected to be one of the largest hospitals built in the country in this six-year period.
New O’Horán will increase hospital capacity
The new General Hospital “Dr. Agustín O’Horán” represents significant growth in terms of medical capacity and services. It is expected to increase from 4 to 11 hectares, from 254 to 300 beds, from 6 to 15 operating rooms, and from 41 to 81 offices. In addition, it will include specialized clinics such as women’s clinics, cleft lip and palate clinics, pain clinics, and palliative care clinics.
It will also have a heliport for emergencies, facilitating quick access with the support of the helicopter of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP).
The simultaneous construction of three hospitals in Yucatán, which includes the Naval Hospital in Progreso and Ticul, represents a historic milestone in the transformation of the health system in the entity.
The construction of the new O’Horán hospital is the result of the governor’s successful efforts before the Federation, ensuring that the Yucatecan population receives quality care in modern facilities.
On this visit, the governor was accompanied by the Secretary of Social Development (Sedesol), Roger Torres Peniche; the rector of the Metropolitan Technological University (UTM) and spokesperson for the Universal Health Card, Insurance for Single Mothers and Support for Single Mothers schemes, Isabel Rodríguez Heredia; the general director of the Yucatán Highway Infrastructure Institute (Incay), Sergio Chan Lugo; the Secretary of Public Works (SOP), Aref Karam Espósitos, and the director of Planning and Development of Services of the SSY, Saúl de los Santos Briones.
