Ken Salazar, US ambassador to Mexico, expressed, during the Roundtable on Combating Arms Trafficking and Best Practices, the importance of keeping the communities of both countries safe from the use of weapons, working to seize and dismantle them.
Through the Bicentennial Framework and the High Level Security Dialogue, between the United States and Mexico, the efforts between both were highlighted to prevent and disrupt cross-border arms trafficking in all its stages.
Between complaints and the efforts of agencies such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the United States Customs and Border Protection Office, the Office of Homeland Security Investigations and the International Office of Counternarcotics Affairs and Attorney General’s Office, the US Embassy reports preventing the trafficking of more than 7,000 firearms into Mexican territory.

This arms trafficking occurs mainly due to cross-border phenomena between both countries, as Alicia Bárcena, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned in a statement during a recent hearing of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR).
Estimates from the United States Embassy in Mexico indicate that in 2023, 655 investigative cases will be raised, resulting in 463 arrests, in the United States. For his part, Salazar reaffirms his desire to combat the criminal networks behind illicit trafficking, which he has defined as his top priority.
