A federal judge based in Toluca, state of Mexico, sentenced Samuel Upalia Medina, La Mama, identified as the leader of Los Zetas in Campeche, and who was arrested in 2011, to 30 years in prison.
The Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO) provided the necessary evidence for the conviction to be issued for the crime of organized crime.
In March 2011, in a joint operation, elements of the Mexican Navy-Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Ministerial Police of Campeche, and the State Preventive Police raided a home in the Manigua neighborhood, in San Francisco, Campeche, to Upalia Medina based on a location and presentation order, since he was identified as the head of the Los Zetas Cartel .
Before being a member of Los Zetas and becoming the plaza boss in Campeche, Upalia Medina served as a police officer in the state of Veracruz.
The Third District Court of Federal Criminal Proceedings in the State of Mexico, based in Toluca, issued its resolution and the now sentenced person is imprisoned in the Federal Center for Social Rehabilitation number 7, in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango.
