Destinations such as Playa del Carmen are practically sold out for the New Year’s weekend.

The Riviera Maya is at 90% occupancy in the last days of the year, after the Christmas festivities, in the approximately 57 thousand hotel rooms in the destination.

Andrea Lotito, vice president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, mentioned that they expect that in the following hours with the end of the year, occupancy will increase even more.

“In the first fortnight we were decent, between 60 to 70 points, and in the last seven days of the year we grew with the hope of reaching 95 to 100% occupancy,” explained Andrea Lotito.

Currently, the points where the large number of people arriving in the Riviera Maya can be seen are on Fifth Avenue and the beaches in the center of Playa del Carmen.

There are almost no traces of the ravages of the pandemic almost four years after confinement was decreed. This has caused new markets to return to Playa del Carmen during the New Year’s Eve holidays.

The issue of strengthening the peso against the dollar can be seen in an international destination like the Riviera Maya. Andrea Lotito said that this factor has made the destination more expensive.

They hope to maintain the bonanza even in the first weeks of January with acceptable numbers until Easter and occupancy averages of 75%, as they have anticipated from within the hotel organization.
