The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) can endorse the reopening this year of the José Peón Contreras Theater, even though the rescue of the vault, where the Las Musas mural by Nicolás Allegretti is located, has not even begun, the delegate assured. in Yucatán, Anna Goycoolea Artís.
Until now, more than a year and a half after the fire that destroyed part of the upper floors of the facility, studies of the deterioration of the vault are still being carried out to begin its comprehensive restoration, which is what will take the longest.
The INAH does not even have an idea of how long it will take to restore the work in its entirety, since being a historical heritage, various evaluations have to be made about the losses and the methods to “intervene” it appropriately.
“With regard to the restoration work, studies are being carried out on the deterioration of the vault in order to begin its comprehensive restoration. That’s what will take the most time. However, it is planned that, although the restoration work is being carried out, the theater could be opened,” he indicated.
However, Goycoolea Artís assured that progress has been made in rehabilitating the other spaces damaged by the incident; Likewise, he indicated that the cleaning and removal of debris have been completed, in addition to provisional work to avoid further deterioration.
He indicated that it is difficult to give percentages of progress, because he does not know how much the State Government has rebuilt; As far as INAH is concerned, the insurance collection process is still in progress.
The recovery works are coordinated by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the INAH, and the Government of the State of Yucatán, who reported at the time that said project was prepared in detail due to the historical and symbolic importance of the property; A total investment of 120 million pesos was contemplated for restoration, renovation and equipment for the preservation of the facility, inaugurated in 1908.
