A Cancun taxi driver was robbed, assaulted, and his vehicle was set on fire.
A taxi driver who stopped to pick up two subjects on Chacmool Avenue on the corner of Niño Héroes was beat up and stripped of his car, which was set on fire in the Las Islas subdivision a few minutes later. The arsonists also assaulted the driver.
The events took place after midnight on Tuesday, January 23, when the personnel of the 911 emergency center were alerted about two cars that were engulfed in flames on 13 de Diciembre Street, in the Las Islas subdivision, so municipal police officers immediately moved to the aforementioned place.
At the scene, the officers found only a compact vehicle completely engulfed in flames, so they immediately proceeded to extinguish the fire which took approximately 30 minutes.
After the fire was controlled, the firefighters realized that it was a Changan brand car, with economic number 0154, of which only a part of the body and the license plates remained.
According to the residents’ version, two men got out of the car, sprayed the vehicle with a liquid, set it on fire, and ran away, so they immediately alerted the authorities.
Personnel from the Andrés Quintana Roo union appeared at the site to carry out the necessary procedures and clarify that the driver had not been deprived of his liberty but had been assaulted and his cab incinerated.
The taxi driver stated that one of the two men pointed a firearm at the back of his neck and forced him to hand over the money. The thieves took him down onto 12 de Diciembre Street. and right there they set fire to the vehicle.
The cab driver took refuge a few blocks from the scene of the incident and managed to ask for support from his union delegates who took charge of advising the driver to file the complaint and later a union tow truck was in charge of removing the car.
