The Mexican Navy seized a package with a substance that later tested positive for cocaine on the island of Cozumel after a routine inspection.
The Mexican Navy reported that on January 6, 2024, a package with a substance similar to cocaine was found and secured in the vicinity of Cozumel Island, Quintana Roo. The discovery was made during a routine inspection of the beaches by naval personnel from the Fifteenth Naval Zone.
According to a statement by the Mexican Navy, the package was rectangular and wrapped in black plastic. Upon opening the wrap, it was observed that it contained a white powder that appeared to be cocaine. The weight of the package was 1,014.7 kg, which indicates that it is a high-value illicit shipment.
The package was delivered to the Attorney General’s Office in Cancún, where the chemical analysis and corresponding investigation will be carried out. The authorities seek to determine the origin and destination of this substance, as well as identify those responsible for its transfer and distribution.
This is the second case of this type that has been recorded so far this year in the area. On January 2, the Navy also secured another package with 1,020 kg of cocaine on Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo. These events show the presence of criminal groups that try to use the Mexican coasts as a route for drug trafficking.
