This February 20 residents of Celestún received a surprise, where in the morning more than 20 pilot whales were stranded on the shore of the beach. The whales were in the area known as “La Herradura”, behind the port breakwaters.
Videos of the sighting of more than 20 whales stranded on the shore were spread on social media and the incident was reported to the authorities to try to help them.
The pilot whales managed to return to the sea thanks to fishermen and agents of the Navy. However, the unexpected spectacle caught the attention of dozens of people and strangers.
Pilot whales are black and large, they normally live in temperate waters and are highly present in the Atlantic Ocean.
In the first days of 2024, dolphin sightings were recorded in Yucatecan ports, causing at least one death. In Telchac Puerto, residents managed to return two dolphins that were stranded to the sea, although environmentalist Carlos Santana Arjona requested the support of Profepa.
They were dolphins and they washed up alive on the seashore in Telchac Puerto, reported then the Team of the Yucatan Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program (Picmmy), from Uady.
Days later, residents of Río Lagartos shared videos of dolphins on Facebook, which represented a new attraction for visitors. However, as some people feared, it was later reported that one of the dolphins seen in the Río Lagartos reserve became stranded in the Yoluk area, near the Las Coloradas bridge, and died.
