The positioning and promotion strategies of Yucatán as a leading destination at a national and international level have resulted in the arrival of overnight tourists to the main lodging centers during 2023 registering an increase of 14.2 percent compared to 2022. , reported the Secretary of Tourism Promotion of the State Government (Sefotur).
According to the monthly report on tourist activity, which the agency recently announced on its official website, at the end of 2023, the number of overnight visitor arrivals was 2 million 396 thousand 867, which represented an increase of 298 thousand 101 people, compared to the 2 million 98 thousand 766 tourists that were reached in 2022.
The state agency specified that, of the total number of visitors who arrived at the main lodging centers in the State, 80.8 percent corresponded to national tourists, with 1,936,971; while 19.2% were of foreign origin, with a total of 459,896.
In addition, he detailed that during the period from January to December 2023, the city of Mérida concentrated 78.7 percent of overnight visitors in the entity, with 1,886,506; while the “Magical Town” of Valladolid accumulated 13.1%, with 315,106 people.
Other destinations that also accumulated a significant number of overnight visitors in 2023 were Chichén Itzá, with 84,330; Izamal, with 64,886; and Uxmal, with 46 thousand 39 visitors. Sefotur added that, in December alone, Yucatán received a total of 219,305 overnight visitors, which meant a 3.1 percent increase compared to the same month in 2022, when the figure was 212,717, that is, a difference of 6,588 people.
This data also reflected an increase of 20.3 percentage points compared to December 2019, before the Coronavirus pandemic began when 182,337 visitors were reported, that is, a difference of 36,968 more tourists who came to stay at the State in that month. He specified that during the period, the Yucatecan capital also concentrated the highest number of overnight visitors, with 77.9 percent, that is, 170,822 people; while Valladolid received 13.7%: 30 thousand 37 people.
It is important to mention that the offer of lodging services has also been increasing in Yucatán, since, until the end of 2023, a total of 16,483 hotel rooms were recorded, which also meant an increase of 4.6 points compared to the 15 1,756 that were at the end of 2022. At the time, the head of Sefotur, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, highlighted that Yucatán would inherit good growth in tourism, as there was a 22 percent growth in new tourist establishments, as well as such as tax collection above 221 percent, which demonstrates a solid and self-sustaining industry.
