Mérida Carnival: One hundred thousand people attended the “Regional Monday”

n an environment with a lot of flavor of Yucatán, its roots and its culture, thousands of families and visitors enjoyed “Regional Monday” tonight in Ciudad Carnaval, on what was the penultimate day of the Carnival festivities.

Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro, accompanied by his wife, the president of DIF Mérida, Verónica Cetina Arjona, attended this parade dressed in regional costume to honor Yucatecan customs and traditions on this night that was framed with the musical notes of the jarana.

Before an attendance of more than one hundred thousand people, the members of the troupes proudly paraded tonight wearing spectacular suits, hipiles, guayaberas and espadrilles, to show the attendees the cultural wealth and folklore that distinguishes Yucatán to the world.

Due to the great attendance that the carnival parades have had, the mayor highlighted that without a doubt all spectator records have been broken on each of the days of the festivities in honor of Momo.

“We still have one last parade to go, but the Mérida Carnival is generating a great economic impact that we believe will exceed the 600 million pesos recorded last year,” he said.

As an example of the traditions and culture of Yucatan, the members of the Regular, Youth, Representative and Children’s Folkloric Ballets of the Mérida City Council were among the first contingents of the regional parade.

Impeccable outfits on Regional Monday

They proudly carried hipiles, silk shawls around their waists, women’s masks, bandanas and other implements typical of the daily life of the mestizos, filling the route with joy and noise.

To the rhythm of 3×4 and 6×8 jaranas, nearly 300 students from the regional folklore area (jarana) of the Municipal Dance Center joined the traditional parade in which Yucatecan traditions shone.

In total, 576 revelers participated, including representatives of San Pedro Noh Pat, Umán, Kanasín, Hoctún, Sotuta, Seyé and the Juventud Dorada group.

While songs such as “La fiesta del pueblo”, “Chinito Koi Koi”, “Nicte Há”, “A zapatear” and “Meridana” were heard, among others, mestizos, wearing embroidered suits and Filipino clothes, gave a show of talent with steps, tap dances and dances prepared for the occasion.

“The dance of the sowers” ​​was performed by the Jarana Formal group, while during the course popular characters from the region were also presented, such as the “chinero”, the baker, the cotton farmer and the seed and peanut sellers, represented by students from the CMD Mexican Dance area.

In addition, tonight’s course was graced with the presence of the actress, comedian and host Mariana Echeverría, as well as the comedians Germán and Freddy Ortega, “Los Mascabrothers”, who during the walk greeted Mayor Alejandro Ruz and his wife , Veronica Cetina.

During the “Regional Monday”, 28 troupes and 26 floats paraded. Comprehensive Development Centers of the City Council of Mérida, Sara Mena, Komchén, Miraflores, San José, and Chuburná, among others, also participated.
