According to a report by ResearchMX, during the government of President López Obrador, a homicide is committed every 15 minutes.
So far in the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador – from December 1, 2019 to February 21, 2024 – 180,030 intentional homicides have been committed in Mexico, according to the daily report ‘MX: The War in Numbers’, by T-ResearchMX.
The report recorded that in this government a homicide is committed every 15 minutes, that is, an average of 95 a day, based on statistics from the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, as well as the records of the Federal and State prosecutors’ offices.
The statistics show a slight decrease of 20 percent in the number of homicides in 2023 compared to 2018—the last year of Enrique Peña Nieto’s government; However, the current administration exceeds the number of victims of violence by dozens.
Enrique Peña Nieto registered 122,472 homicide victims at the end of his government; Former President Felipe Calderón recorded 96,495 murders, and in the government of Vicente Fox, 50,677 murders were documented.
T-ResearchMX highlighted that there are five entities that concentrate the majority of homicides in the country: Guanajuato (21,936), State of Mexico (16,075), Baja California (14,972), Chihuahua (13,922) and Michoacán (12,087).
