Óscar David Lozano Águila, director of the Mayan Train, announced on Monday, February 12th, that the work will be completed and ready to inaugurate the whole route once the elections in Mexico are over.

We would like to be able to inaugurate as the infrastructure is generated or completed, we are entering a closed period in which we cannot hold public events.

When will the complete Mayan Train route be inaugurated?

Lozano Águila reported that due to the electoral ban “the President of the Republic has decided that, by the end of June, we will have all the railway systems completed, that is, the 1,554 kilometers of track will be completed by that date “, he announced during the morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

Óscar David Lozano acknowledged that the Maya Train has “barely” transported 1,787 international tourists in the two months it has been in operation.

“In these 55 days of operations, we could transport 50,976 passengers. It’s easy to say, but that’s an average of 927 people moving every day,” Lozano said.

Since it began operations on December 16, he explained, the Mayan Train has sold 1,787 tickets for international tourists, 20,456 for national visitors, 19,890 for residents, and 8,843 special rates, such as teachers, students, senior citizens, and people with mobility problems.

This means that only 3.51% of the passengers have been international travelers and 40.13% national tourists.

Five Tren Maya passenger trains are operating.
Lozano, who is an Army general, explained that the Maya Train has made 345 trips.

For now, he added, five passenger trains are operating, each with an average of 84% occupancy, transporting an average of 186 passengers.

The director asserted that the service has been punctual, although in January the president acknowledged that there have been “problems” for the trains to arrive at the stations on time, “but everything will be corrected.”

We have complied with the schedules and that is important, that they know that the train is operating according to the scheduled times, arriving at the stated time, and leaving to guarantee quality service.

The Maya Train is López Obrador’s great bet to accelerate the economy of the Mexican southeast with more than 1,500 kilometers of railway to transport cargo, tourists, and local passengers in the five states of the region: Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatan.

The president inaugurated the section from Campeche to Cancún on December 15, but the railroad suspended the service from December 28 to 31 for the inauguration of the route from Cancún to Palenque.

General Lozano now announced that on February 29, the section that runs through Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Playa del Carmen, the main tourist destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, will be inaugurated.
