62-year-old man drowns in a Cenote

A senior citizen lost his life in the cenote located between the Dzityá and Cheyman communities, in the municipality of Mérida.

MERIDA, YUCATAN (March 24, 2024).- According to witnesses the now deceased, a 62-year-old man, came with his family to the “Chen Haa” cenote to bathe, but he sat on the shore to soak his feet and accidentally slipped and since he didn’t know how to swim, he began to submerge, and was not able to get out.

His son, upon seeing what happened, went into the water to try to rescue him but it was impossible and they called 911.

The SSP firefighters’ divers arrived at the scene and were able to retrieve the man’s lifeless body.

Relatives indicated that the now deceased was not under the influence of alcohol.

The place was cordoned off by State Police agents, while personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office carried out the corresponding procedures.
